Where

The Big Plan

We are notoriously vague planners, much to the annoyance of friends and family. However, as departure day draws near, we have a pretty good idea of where and when we are going.

The big plan is to go around the world, from East to West, over the course of 3 years, during which we’ll take a 9 – 12 month break in New Zealand for some earning and sleeping under a solid roof.African Route

The first task is get down the West side of Africa to Capetown, may as well get the easy bit over at the start! From South Africa, we will fly to Argentina and head up the West side of South America, through Central America and on to the USA and Canada. Ready to fly again, this time to New Zealand, where we will sell our major organs to raise funds for the remainder of the trip. Click on the rather poor map pictures for a closer look. The blue line is a rough approximation of where we are headed, as drawn by my wavering hand.

New Zealand is the halfway point for us, everything afterwards is Part II, which will be planned whilst recovering from the organ removal.South America Route

Part II will consist of Australia, hopefully parts of Asia, Japan and then a quick blast across Russia, through Europe and back to the UK. The alert among you will notice we have a few minor details to thrash out for Part II.

When

We are leaving at the end March 2007 (19 days away, as I write!). The first few months will be spent heading through France, possibly Italy, then over to Spain and down to Morocco for a couple of months. We will return to Spain for a wee visit to go trail riding in the Pyrenees with a bunch of like minded fools and nip to Portugal to see a good friend visiting from New Zealand (Hi Rob!).

Somewhere around late September 2007 we will be heading South of Morocco to start the trip proper. We should hit South Africa by early Feb 2008, and New Zealand by September 2008.

I’ll come back here and write about Part II when we’re in New Zealand.

    Hi Dan and Lindsey,

Finally found you on the internet – not an easy task. I have very fond memories of meeting you both back in March.

Fancy meeting up for a drink? I am in the North West at present.

By the way, is the title of your website ‘GoneforaBurton’ a clever allusion to the great explorer Richard Burton, or am I reading too much into it?

    Best wishes

    Simon
